What is Spina Bifida?

Spina bifida occurs when a baby's spine doesn't fully close in the first months of pregnancy, and it exists on a spectrum from mild to severe. Severity isn't predictable from the location of the defect, and mobility varies widely — some walk independently, others use crutches, braces, or wheelchairs. Across that whole spectrum, people with spina bifida are singers, athletes, students, and professionals living full, accomplished lives.
